Investing should be more like watching paint dry

February 26, 2024

“Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 and go to Las Vegas.”

This is a quote attributed to Paul Samuelson, who was the first American to win the Nobel prize in Economics. He entered the University of Chicago at age 16, during the depths of the Great Depression, and received his PhD in economics from Harvard. After graduating, he became an assistant professor of economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) when he was 25 years of age and a full professor at age 32.

In a world where the allure of quick gains can be overwhelming, his words serve as a reminder of the importance of patience and discipline in financial decisions. As an advocate for prudent and calculated investment strategies, I believe in embracing the steady, long-term approach advocated by Samuelson. Let's shift our focus from seeking excitement to prioritizing stability and sustainability in our investment journey. Remember, true wealth is built gradually, not through impulsive actions.
